Message from the Director of the National Institute of Corrections
As we recognize National Pretrial, Probation, and Parole Supervision Week, I extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the dedicated professionals who serve communities across our nation every day. Parole Services holds a special place in my heart and career as I began my journey in 1994 as a West Virginia Parole Officer.
The Texas Jail Association held its 40th Annual Conference on May 4–8, 2026, in San Marcos, Texas. The event reflected four decades of commitment to advancing detention operations across the state.
The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) recently hosted the Executive Leadership for New Wardens training. The training is designed to equip newly appointed wardens with essential leadership skills to confidently apply to their jobs. The program, which took place at the National Corrections Academy (NCA) in Aurora, Colorado, from April 21-24, 2026, welcomed 29 newly appointed wardens from around the country.
The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) will soon release the Civility in the Correctional Workplace program package, which contains two exciting new training opportunities: an e-course titled Civility Basics for the Correctional Professional, and a virtual, instructor-led training (VILT) titled Fostering Civility in the Correctional Workplace.
On April 30, 2026, NIC's Community Services Division convened a listening session in Washington, DC, with nine executives of community supervision agencies from across the United States. Participants included state probation and parole leaders, paroling authority leaders, a Criminal Justice Coordinating Council director, a Community Criminal Justice Board consultant, and the executive directors of the three national associations active in the community supervision field.
In Washington, DC, on April 28-29, 2026, NIC convened community corrections stakeholders from across the nation to engage in strategic dialogue focused on emerging trends, critical concerns, evolving needs, and future opportunities within the field of community corrections.
From March 10–11, 2026, the Major County Sheriffs of America, National Sheriffs’ Association, and Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association joined forces with the National Institute of Corrections to focus on one critical priority: wellness for our nation’s sheriffs. Active and retired sheriffs from across the country, along with state sheriffs’ association leaders, engaged in candid discussions about the unique challenges that sheriffs face at each stage of their careers and the support they need to stay healthy and effective in their roles.
On February 23–27, 2026, NIC conducted Correctional Case Management for Jails training for the Arlington County, VA, Sheriff’s Office. Following a 2-hour county delay due to snow, the class began with 14 participants. There were 3 counties in attendance in the training: Arlington and Prince William, VA and Montgomery Co, MD. The participants included a Captain, a Lieutenant, a Case Management Supervisor and Case Managers.
The North Carolina Jail Administrators’ Association Symposium, held on Thursday, April 16 in Greensboro, North Carolina, served North Carolina sheriffs. During the symposium, the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) provided an overview of the available programs and services it offers, and Panda Adkins, Director of the Jails Justice Support Center (JJSC), provided an overview of services available through the JJSC. In partnership, NIC and JJSC delivered the following two workshops for sheriffs, chief deputies, state jail administrators, and their seconds-in-command:
On April 13, 2026, NIC debuted Leadership Evolution: From Manager to Leader, a training for Massachusetts Probation Services (MPS). Months of planning went into preparing the pilot delivery in Clinton, MA, with 23 participants. This program promotes key leadership behaviors in mid- and senior-level leaders by capitalizing on the results of multiple assessments to inform self-awareness, self-efficacy, and deepen awareness of interpersonal relationships in the workplace. The program promotes individual growth through application of concepts to daily individualized leadership interactions.
The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships across the corrections field during the Correctional Leadership Association Conference held in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
NIC Director Patrick Mirandy was joined by Community Services Division Chief Robbye Braxton, Acting Prisons Division Chief Scott Richards, and National Programs Advisor Kendall Rhyne to reintroduce NIC’s mission, services, and collaborative opportunities to correctional leaders representing 47 jurisdictions.
The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) presents Development of Evidence Informed Learning Resources to Promote Staff Wellness, Well-Being, and the Reduction of Staff Trauma and Organizational Stress in Prison and Jail Settings: Brief Report.
